Allford Hall Monaghan Morris chosen to restore Liverpool's Royal Court Theatre
THE award-winning architects behind the Saatchi Gallery and the refurbishment of the Barbican have been chosen to restore Liverpool’s Royal Court theatre.
Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, which won a RIBA prize for the city’s Unity Building last year, beat 51 high profile architecture practices from as far afield as Brazil, New York and Paris.
The design aims to modernise the existing building without changing its 1930s identity and is estimated to cost £5m to £10m to realise.
Liverpool-born Paul Monaghan, the firm’s co-founder, said: "It is such an honour to be working on this important building in my home city and we are very excited by the powerful vision that the Royal Court has for this theatre.
"It was a tough competition to win against strong opposition but I truly believe that our design will breathe new life into the historic elements of the building by mixing them with new contemporary elements."
Royal Court management is working to raise the funding for the project before the work can begin.
